Introducing Alisha & Syon - our Summer of Tech interns

Alisha Jaggi

Syon Divekar

We’re so excited to have Alisha Jaggi and Syon Divekar joining our team as part of the Summer of Tech internship program.

Here’s a quick Q&A with them, so you can get to know them a little.

First of all, tell us a little bit about yourself

Alisha: Hi there, my name is Alisha Jaggi and I am a current software engineering intern at First AML. I have completed my degree in Bachelors of Engineering (Hons), majoring in Software and minor in Networks and Security this semester.

Syon: My name's Syon, I'm a Uni student that enjoys working with software. I'm studying Computer Systems Engineering at the University of Auckland, moving into my final year

Now tell us a bit about Summer of Tech - why you joined the program and what the process was like for you.

Alisha: I joined Summer of Tech to gain some experience within software engineering and get exposed to practical experience on how it is like working within a tech company as an aspiring software engineer. For me, the. process was like attending some bootcamps for professional development, attending a virtual meet and greet session where I interacted with industry professionals from other companies, going through speed interviews and getting an offer.

Syon: SoT is a programme that NZ students can use to connect with local tech companies for the summer. The process has you choose a few companies that are available on the platform, after which you'll have speed interviews followed by a final interview. After that some of the companies you had interviews with may reach out with an offer. It was fun to gain experience in what job interviews are like, and learn some things I hadn't heard about during Uni.

What was it about First AML that made you want to join us?

Alisha: It is a strong company that commits to diversity and inclusion and aims to help employees unleash their potential, along with being a supportive and fun environment to work in.

Syon: KYC and CDD are both concepts that I didn't really have experience in prior to joining First AML. The idea of learning something totally new was exciting, and a big reason why I wanted to join the company.

You’ve been here for a couple of weeks now. What are your first impressions?

Alisha: I feel that First AML is a really good company to work within because it aims to balance work and social life, and where people are happy to help and support each other, considering each other as their own family member. For example, we have sessions where we can socialise and connect with each other through fortnightly retrospectives, quizzes and social chats.

Syon: Everyone is really tight-knit and ready to help with any questions you might have. The team gets to banter and catch up with regular meets like quizzes and social chats which keeps things fun. I like how all the departments communicate with each other to make sure the platform is as good as it can be - and it's been interesting to learn about the process of pushing code from a local testing environment all the way to production.

And finally, I've heard that you'll be working on a project throughout the course of your internship — what would you most like to learn during this project?

Alisha: I hope to gain experience as how it is like working in a startup tech company as an intern, what my typical day would look like and upskilling myself more on the Front-end aspect.

Syon: I'd like to gain a better understanding of the good practices associated with a project like this, from unit testing to code reviews and the like. Overall I'd like to extend my skills and abilities as a software dev and be a good team member.

Thanks Alisha and Syon! We’ll check back in with you towards the end of your internship and find out what you’ve been working on.
